“It’s disorienting when you’re constantly looking back at where you’ve been.”
It was not meant to be a profound statement. My mom was describing her recent trip to the hospital after a dizzy spell which included an ambulance ride where she was facing backward. Staring out of the rear window made her feel anxious. As she watched the places she had been it made her confused.
I think many of us face this same challenge. We have an idea of where we want to be in life. We have identified patterns of thinking, behaviors, and expectations of others that limit us. There may even be a clear destination ahead. And while we want to make progress forward, many of us find ourselves gazing into the review mirror. We watch …we analyze and scrutinize…we wonder what could have been or long for who we were and what once was. Our minds are filled with the “if only’s.” If only I had…if only I would. It can be paralyzing.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes it may be helpful to look back at the past in order for us to move forward into the future. We may be able to identify our methods of self-sabotage or unhealthy thinking. Dismantling those obstacles can make the road ahead easier to navigate. So if you are sensing that something from the past is keeping you from the vision of what God has for you then, by all means, take a look. Just don’t get stuck there.
Remember that God is always creating. He is doing something new. His plan for you is good and life-giving. He redeems the greatest failures and heals the deepest hurts. He does not look into the rearview mirror of your life hemming and hawing at what you’ve done and who you’ve been. He does not study your past or hold it against you in the future. His mind is made up that you are the most valuable thing to Him. He uses all things for your good and His glory.
So, what are you constantly looking back at in the review mirror of your life? What are you staring at in your past that is keeping you from walking into your future? What do you need to do to reposition yourself to see what’s ahead? What’s one step you can take today to move forward?
Praying for you and expecting God to do great things!
