“I’m not ok. I’m tired…physically, emotionally, spiritually. I’m depleted, beyond empty. Everyone wants something…do more, give more. How can my life be so full and so empty at the same time? Few people really want to know how you’re doing. They just want you to be fixed and for things to go back to normal. But normal is what got me here. Normal is killing me and I don’t want it anymore.”
I stared at the words scribbled furiously in my journal. My secret was out, at least on paper and I was relieved. I didn’t have the energy to pretend anymore. I had grown accustomed to the seemingly “normal” activities and pace that were keeping me from experiencing full and abundant life. I had been like this for a long time. It was familiar territory and I knew things needed to change.
That’s when I was confronted by a question Jesus asked a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years as he sat by the pool of Bethesda, waiting for someone to help him in because it was believed the water had healing properties.
“Do you want to get well?”
At first glance, this question seemed absurd. “Do you want to get well?” Of course he wanted to get well, right? What person doesn’t want to get well? What paralyzed man doesn’t want to walk? Who doesn’t want to trade in their overstuffed life for margin and peace? Who doesn’t want their undernourished soul to be fed and renewed?
But Jesus knew he had been living this way for so long that he had grown accustomed to his condition, perhaps even comfortable living this way. Healing and wholeness would turn his life upside down. It would mean a new way of living and it would change everything.
So the question hung there and still often comes to my mind.
“Do you want to get well?”
It’s hard to change and give up “normal” even when it brings healing and wholeness. “Change me, Lord, just don’t make me change.” But to live radically different means embracing a new thought process, shifting your perspective and making different choices.
I’m in the planning stages of launching Giving Up Normal, a monthly podcast dedicated to helping you stop the normal things that are sucking the life out of you and start being the person and leader God has created you to be. But until then I wonder…
* What are the seemly normal things that are keeping you from experiencing full and abundant life?
* What keeps you from getting well?
* What’s one thing that you sense you need to stop because it is taking life from you or one thing you need to start as a means of God’s grace which will breathe life into you?
