Today holds great significance. It is a day that many of us remember well. It was also a Tuesday. The sky was blue as can be as the first of the crisp fall air settled over the northern half of the east coast. I was on the phone with one of my best friends while our boys, only months apart, were playing. They weren’t even two years old.
The Today Show was on in the background and I noticed that they were covering a breaking news story. It was believed that a small plane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. It didn’t take long to figure out that the gaping hole was not caused by a small plane but by a large passenger jet. My friend and I stayed on the phone all morning long, watching the horror unfold in NYC, Washington D.C. and in a field in Pennsylvania.
Today holds great significance. It was a day when thousands lost their lives, hundreds of thousands lost people they knew and a country lost its innocence. Yet out of the ashes emerged stories of heroism, selflessness, and courage…dare I even say unity.
We said we would never forget but I’m afraid time has dulled our commitment. Monday night football, the resignation of CBS’s CEO and all things Trump grabbed more airtime today than any mention of September 11th. #network fail
Today holds great significance. It is a reminder of how far we have spiraled in the last 17 years. We are a country divided. A gaping hole grows larger with each passing day. We have no tolerance for people who view life differently than we do. We shout people down and drown people out. We sever relationships and break ties that bind. Out of the ashes emerge stories of hatred, selfishness, and cowardice. We are anything but unified!
It is dark in our world today but not hopeless.
Today holds great significance. It is an opportunity. We have a chance to believe, live and lead radically different.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 NLT
Live radically different! Don’t take your cue from society or even network news as to what you should hold dear. Instead, let God change the way you think. Release any feelings of entitlement and resentment that have been built up in you and around you. Don’t exchange insult for injury. Don’t demand your own way. Dialogue with people, forgive the unforgivable, love the unlovable. Be selfless and courageous. Dare I say, be unified!!
Let God go beneath the surface of your life to bring hope and healing to your brokenness. Rely on God, trusting that His will for you and for this world is good!
Live radically different! Be the change you seek!
Today holds great significance. It is a Tuesday. Some of us have blue skies and are experiencing the crisp air that signals fall is approaching. But all of us have been given today as a gift. And we have the freedom to choose how we live and treat others.
How are you going to live radically different today? What behavior or action do you need to stop because you are copying it from the world?
“Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:2 The Message
Never forget. Today holds great significance. It can be the day the world changed for the better.
