Why is it so hard to start?
There is a stirring deep within you. Your heart is telling you it’s time. You’ve arranged your schedule, done your research, bought your gear, decided on your goal. You’ve talked this thing to death. You are all in! This is it! You are committed!
What if your plan doesn’t work? What if there is something that will cause your schedule to change? What if you don’t keep up? What if you fumble? What if you FAIL?
If you find yourself in this place today, you are not alone. Starting is hard.
For almost two years I’ve known that I am called to write. I started this blog over a year ago but it was hard to keep showing up and doing the work. Life was full. I served a church full time as a pastor. There were things to do for my home, my family, and my health. There were relationships that were important…plus I needed margin! My writing routine suffered because (or so I thought) I had very little time or flexibility.
Here I am, twenty-three months later. I left my full-time job and I committed to this new adventure. I have the time. I have the resources. I have flexibility. I’ve joined a working-writers group. I have watched videos on establishing a writing routine. I read about writing…think about writing…dream about writing. I just haven’t been writing!!!
I want to have everything figured out at the beginning. I want to know what will work and what won’t. I have a hard time giving myself permission to try different things…to see what works for me and make adjustments along the way.
I am afraid to fail.
My thoughts remind me that I don’t have it all together. There’s so much I don’t know. Yet, that same brain is persistent to whisper that the only way I’m going to figure it out is to JUST START!
There is power in starting. All you have to do is one thing…take one step. Throw one thing away. Read one page. Pray one prayer. Schedule one coffee date with that friend. Take one walk. Type one word.
Don’t worry about getting it right. Don’t fixate on how you’ll keep it up. Show up. Take a step.
That’s when the real adventure begins! When we take a step in obedience to go after the desire that God has put in our hearts, something happens. We can feel the momentum. We begin to gain traction. And before we know it we are taking another step…and we are doing it! We are making progress. We’re learning. We’re growing. God is shaping our reality and we are living radically different! All because we decided to just start!
I heard a pastor talk about this recently. He reminded us:
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…”
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
The Amplified Version puts it like this:
Who [with reason] despises the day of small things (beginnings)?”
Then he went on to say,
Never underestimate how God can do something big through one small habit. Never underestimate how God can launch something special through one small discipline. Never underestimate what God might set into motion through one small act of obedience.” -Craig Groeschel, Life Church
How wonderful! God will do more than you and I can ask or imagine if we JUST START. One step. One thing. One act. Then watch God work! And don’t forget, no one…no thing can stop what God has planned for you!
In what area of your life are you trying to make changes and live radically different? Maybe you want to clean and organize your home, read a book, or find more time to be with God. Perhaps you know it’s time to cultivate a meaningful relationship with a friend, integrate prayer throughout your day, begin a new hobby or do something that will help you care for yourself well.
Whatever it is…just start. Choose one thing. What will it be? How will you start? I’d love to hear about it in the comments! I’m cheering you on! Begin anywhere and watch God do something amazing!
