I should be content. There are so many things in my life that are good…no, great! I have an awesome family and a good home. I don’t know what it means to be poor. There is plenty of food on the table each day. Every person in our family has their own car to drive. No one is dealing with cancer. I have meaningful friendships. I don’t know what it’s like to live in a war-torn country. The list could go on and on. It makes you feel guilty when you look at all the good things you have in life. How can you be so discontent? What’s all the fuss about? Still, a restlessness lingers…a longing for something different keeps on bubbling to the surface. I want change.
I wonder how many people are feeling this way? Is it generational? Do women think more about this than men? Does it depend on your season of life? If we knew how many of us want change, would we have the courage to admit it ourselves? I find that we live by the mantra, “fake it ’til you make it.” We don’t share the deep stuff. We look for the quick fix or gloss over it all together. It’s just too complicated…too draining. And the days turn into weeks, the weeks turn into months, the months turn into years.
Still, a restlessness lingers…a longing for something different keeps on bubbling to the surface…we want change.
So, what’s holding us back? Well, I would imagine there are a thousand reasons why we tell ourselves to ignore our heart’s desires. But there is one thing that many of us seem to do. We keep waiting for the world to change. We wait for other people to change. We wait for our marriage to change, our family to change, our neighbors to change. We wait for government leaders to change, viewpoints to change, and for the way others view us to change. And so we wait, feeding ourselves the lie that if only “this” would change or “that” would change…then somehow it’ll be alright for us to change.
Here the problem…those things many NEVER change! The world may never change. The expectations of others, I’ll just about guarantee, are not going to change. We can not let that impact whether or not we change! We can’t wait for others to feel ok and give us two thumbs up before we decide to honor God by pursuing the desires that He has placed in our hearts.
We need to live radically different than the rest of the world.
We need to lead radically different than the rest of society.
And you know what happens when we do…??? God ends up using us to change something or someone else…because we are walking in obedience to His design, His call, His purpose.
So today I encourage us to Go First. That’s right! GO FIRST. If you sense God’s leading, follow it. If you hear God’s call, do it. If He has given you a passion, leverage it to serve others…whatever the outcome may be.
The reason I felt compelled to start this blog was to build a community where we can encourage and challenge one another to live a radically different life. I have not figured this all out! In fact, I have more answers than questions…still…but I do know that community is a gift and the journey is better together.
If there is an area of your life that I can pray for where you are seeking change, please feel free to share. You may want to just type in one word or explain your entire situation. Either way, I’d count it a privilege to pray for you. I’d also value any input you may have on resources or particular topics that would serve you in your journey. If there is something on your mind please feel free to mention it in the comments or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
