It’s been a long time since I feel like I’ve heard God. I can see Him working in the lives of the people around me. I see things in the scriptures that apply to my own life and I’m not saying that’s not the Holy Spirit. But I don’t feel like I hear Him. I don’t sense His movement or dare I say even His presence. I’m sure it’s a reflection of the listener, not the speaker. It’s not God, it’s me…but I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t know how to fix it. I ask, believe me, I do! I sit…I wait…and God seems silent. Maybe you can relate. Perhaps you find yourself in the uncomfortable quiet…waiting. It’s a hard place to be and it’s tempting to pull away. But there are a few things we can do when God seems silent.
I don’t know about you but I often suffer from spiritual amnesia. I forget who God really is and what He has promised. I struggle to think back on all the ways in which I have heard and sensed Him in the past. God knew this would be our tendency. He made our hearts so He understands everything we do. That is why the scriptures call us to remember! Here are some promises to think about when God seems silent.
When God seems silent our inclination is to disengage. Now more than ever is the time to press in and stay connected. Show up for time with God. Keep seeking. Continue asking. Lean into the quiet and listen. Continue to pray that the Spirit would help you be attentive to His presence and that you would experience His goodness.
When God seems silent it can be hard to worship. But often times I find that if I do, it is some of the most authentic time with God. Don’t wait until you feel like it. Praise God now. Tell Him what you need and thank Him for all He’s done. Recently the song “So Will I” by Hillsong United has brought me into a rich time of worship. It speaks to the power, grandeur, and goodness of God. I use it every day to worship. You can check it out for yourself here.
There are times when God seems to be silent. It can be painful and confusing. But somewhere deep down at the very core of my being, I know that He is there. He is the God who sees, the God who loves, the God who speaks. He is a God of clarity, not confusion. His timing is impeccable and His plan for us is perfect. Nothing can shake His intentions…not our feelings nor our failures or our inability to hear. No silence is too deep for the penetrating love and power of God. So when God seems to be silent…remember…stay connected…and worship.
If the stars were made to worship so will I
If the mountains bow in reverence so will I
If the oceans roar Your greatness so will I
For if everything exists to lift You high so will I
If the wind goes where You send it so will I
If the rocks cry out in silence so will I
If the sum of all our praises still falls shy
Then we’ll sing again a hundred billion times
