Worrying About Your Next Right Thing

June 10, 2019 • Leave a Comment

Are you stuck because you are afraid you will make the wrong choice? Does the sea of possibilities leave you feeling worried that you will head in the wrong direction? Are you paralyzed trying to decide your next right thing?

You are not alone. Many of us worry about making the right choice. We hem and haw, spending all our energy trying to figure out what’s right. Fear holds us down. We get tired and confused. We convince ourselves that we better get it right. We need to make sure we don’t screw it up. We must be absolutely confident and convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that this, in fact, is the right thing, or else.

Emily P. Freeman, in her newest book, The Next Right Thing, gives voice to the struggle of chronic hesitation and decision fatigue. She provides practical steps to gain clarity and offers up prayers for our journey along the way. Her words have helped me fight my fear of making the wrong choice as I step fully into a new season where the possibilities seem endless.

The greatest gift so far has been the permission to live in this space of new beginnings. I don’t have to have it all figured out. Her encouragement has helped me accept that in much of what I feel called to, I am a beginner, and that’s ok. I am allowing myself to be curious and enjoy the process of discovery. Freedom can feel scary but I’m taking up Emily’s invitation to, “Embrace this unique time of being a beginner. Let him [God] teach you what is right, what to say, and how to think. There will come a time when this new beginning will not be new anymore, and you may not feel the need for him as you do now. So let this new role teach you what it has to teach you. Let it form you into the likeness of Christ. Let yourself be a beginner and receive all the gifts beginning has to give.”

If you are tired of struggling to move forward and need the courage to take the next step, pick up The Next Right Thing. It will help you stop your unhealthy decision-making process so that you can move forward as the person God is calling you to be.

On today’s episode of the Giving Up Normal podcast, I share more about giving up the fear of making a wrong decision and disappointing God. To listen, just press play.
