Do you wonder if things will ever change? Will you ever change? Your longings haven’t gone away, in fact, they are more pressing and prevalent. A deep sense of call to be closer to Him keeps stirring in your heart but you don’t feel like God is doing anything to move you forward.
Here’s something I need to be reminded of all the time. Just because you don’t feel a movement of God, doesn’t mean He isn’t moving. The mere fact that these desires keep bubbling to the surface is evidence that He is present and working. God initiates your longings.
In her book Sacred Rhythms, Ruth Haley Barton reminds us that,
The stirring of spiritual desire indicates that God’s spirit is already at work within us, drawing us to Himself. We love because God first loved us. We long for God because he first longed for us. We reach for God because he first reached for us.”
You want more of God because He wants more of you! It may seem like you are alone, desperately trying to press into God, feelings as though you have to convince God to be with you, to come closer, to change you. But the reason that you long for more of God to begin with…more purpose, more meaning…is because God is at work. And here’s the good news. He isn’t going to give up. That’s right! He isn’t going to stop. God continues to do His good work in you until it is completed!
And I am certain that God who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6
It’s God’s work! Your relationship with Him was God initiated within you and He will keep on developing and perfecting your relationship until you see Jesus face to face. So don’t give up and give in to the lie that He has moved on to more important things. Next time you sense this desperate need for Him, remember that He is there…He is stirring that longing within you. Thank Him for His presence. Thank Him that He never stops working and be assured that He won’t stop now!
